A new K-12 saw was placed in service on Truck 8 today. There is still a roof saw, a K-12 saw and the chimney chain in the toolbox mounted beside the aerial ladder. This new K-12 saw will be carried in the rear compartment, officer's side of the rig. Thus allowing us to have 1 saw up top for roof operations and the other down in a compartment for forcible entry or ground operations. This is a valuable piece of equipment to add to our arsenal of Truck company tools.

Tonight both fire departments, York Police Dept. and Kittery Water District were invited to the Chases Pond Rd. Water treatment plant to "show and tell" our ATV's and wildland firefighting equipment. York Water District has a vested interest in protecting the local forest lands. As York Water District and Kittery Water District together, own approximately 4300 acres adjacent to several local bodies of water in York, which supply drinking water and fire protection to the towns of York and Kittery. Cooperation is especially important between these four agencies and the working relationship is based on mutual respect from all parties.
The York Water District in cooperation with York Village and York Beach Fire Departments recently recieved a grant to purchase a small "skid unit" portable firefighting unit to fit in the back of their John Deere Gator to combat small fires in the YWD and KWD land as this forest lands are regularly patrolled by the Water District personnel.

Engine 4 was called to cover North Berwick Fire Station 1 on Monday afternoon. North Berwick Companies and much of York County were tied up at a Passenger Train vs. 18 wheeler crash with fire and an MCI. While the many agencies were tied up operating at this crash a Structure fire was reported in the neighboring town of Sanford which required a second alarm assignment. Many Fire Departments in York County were summoned to provide either station coverage or a scene response on this hot and humid day with temperatures hovering around 91 degrees. In the following photos Engine 4 sits at the ready in front of the "William Hill Fire Station" joined by Berwick Tank 4 after being released from the job in Sanford.

New drivers are required to complete a long, detailed training program in order to be qualified to operate any York Fire Department vehicle. Each new driver needs to reach 100 miles of driving distance, 10 hours of driving time as well as practice and test out on a number of skills for each apparatus.
Pictured here is FF Josh Allen practicing some of the skills required for Engine 6.

On Thursday night, June 30th, members from York Village Fire, York Ambulance and York Police practiced blocking procedures for traffic related incidents. The Maine State Police and other local agencies have teamed up to create a uniform traffic incident safety policy for all incidents on Interstate 95. Local agancies (York Village Fire, York Beach Fire, York Ambulance and York PD) are also going to utilize these new procedures for incidents on all in-town roads. Over the next few weeks, crews will be practicing blocking procedures so that we are all on the same page. This is a common practice in communities throughout the United States and has only recently been adopted as a set procedure in the immediate area.
Blocking provides a safe work space for emergency crews working at an incident. The fire apparatus will block a lane of travel to secure a work space and protect the ambulance, that will park down flow from the accident. Law Enforcement will provide advanced warning behind the fire apparatus, diverting traffic flow around the incident.

York Village Firefighters participated in the York Beach Fire Department's Firemen's field day today. This tradition is quickly becoming a thing of the past and many of our members are fighting to keep the tradition alive.
It started with a noisy parade through York Beach and ended at the York Beach ballfield for the firemen's muster. York Village Fire fielded two teams of 6 members each. Several trophies were brought home, and a good time had by all!!!!!
Thank You to Kittery Fire Lieutenant Steve Erhard for the use of his photos.
Thank You also to Shawn St. Hilaire for the use of his photographs!
