2 Alarms in the "Beach District"

Thursday, August 25, 2011    Thursday afternoon firefighters were kept busy by a thunderstorm that rolled through the area late in the day. York Dispatch toned both departments for a report of a structure fire on Hillside Ave. (Beach District) York Village companies were just clearing a fire alarm activation in York Harbor which was storm related. Squad 2, Engine 4, and Truck 8 responded from the fire alarm. Engine 6 signed on responding from quarters. Engine 5 (York Beach) signed off first-due with smoke showing from a 2 ½ story wood frame dwelling, he requested that the Working Fire assignment be filled out. Engine 3 (York Beach) arrived second due and forward layed a 5” supply line into the fire. Both Engine companies left the “Alpha” side of the building open for Truck 8. Village companies arrived and parked their rigs. The crews went to work, stretching lines off the Beach Engines and throwing ground ladders while the Truck 8 crew went to work getting the aerial to the roof and conducting vertical ventilation by cutting a hole in the roof. The fire was knocked down in 30 minutes with no firefighter or civilian injuries. The house is repairable and the fire is under investigation by Chief Apgar (YV C-4)

Saturday, August 20, 2011  The York Fire Department hosted our 95th Annual Fireman's Field Day and Muster on Saturday, August 20th. This years event was a rousing success thanks to the members of York Village Fire who put in countless hours preparing the station and apparatus for the occasion. We wish to thank all of the participating fire departments who took the time to travel to York for the parade and the six teams who helped us keep the traditional Firemen's muster alive!!!! We are extremely proud to host such a popular event and have no plans to abandon the tradition!!!

After the muster, members and guests met  at Foster's Clam Bake for the annual Firemans Ball that included a dinner and awards.

Thank You to Shawn St. Hilaire and Brian Starkey for the use of their pictures.

The Eliot Fire Department places their new Tank Truck in service

Thursday, August 11, 2011  A congratulatory mention goes to the Eliot Fire Department for the delivery of their new Tank 1.  It is a 2011 International/E-One/Water Master vacuum tanker with a 3000 gallon water tank.  The truck is the first of its type in immediate mutual aid response area and replaces an aging 1980 tank truck that has served its time well, but had difficulty keeping up with today's modern apparatus.

The tanker has a unique self-filling vacuum system that can fill the tank from three suction inlets.  The truck can fill from any alternative water source including ponds, lakes, ditches, swimming pools and rivers.

Eliot Tank 1 responds to all 2nd Alarm structure fires in the areas of York without Fire Hydrants.  This is a valuable improvement to our Tanker coverage.

Hose load standardization Phase II 2 1/2" hose

Saturday, August 6, 2011  Today another phase of the Hose load standardization project was completed with the  delivery of 600' of brand new 2 1/2" hose.  Over the years the apparatus at the York Village Fire Department has all been set up differently. This causes alot of confusion and does not make for efficient operations. Our aim is to make the apparatus as uniform as possible. with this new delivery of hose all apparatus have 600' of 2 1/2" in various combinations of "live" and "dead" loads. York Village Fire uses hose color to denote hose size and use:

Blue: 200' 1 3/4" crosslay (smoothbore nozzle)

Yellow: 200' 1 3/4" crosslay (fog nozzle)

Orange: 300' 1 3/4" rear apartment line (smoothbore)

front bumper trash lines all 100'  1 3/4" with fog nozzle

 2 1/2" HOSE

Red: all red 2 1/2" is "DEAD" loaded (meaning it is not pre-connected to the rig and doesn't have a nozzle on it)

White: all white 2 1/2" is "LIVE" loaded meaning it IS pre-connected to the rig and does have a nozzle on it

(stacked tip smoothbore nozzles are on order so that EVERY rig will have the same nozzle for 2 1/2" hose operations)

Squad 2 has 300' "live" and 300' "dead" plus (2) 300' orange apartment lines with smoothbore nozzles and a minimum of 1000' LDH

Friday, July 29, 2011  York Village Fire was dispatched to Rt. 1 in front of Dead River for a report of a two vehicle accident with injuries and airbag deployement.  Operations were difficult because of heavy rain.  Members packaged two patients who were transported by York Ambulance.  A few hours later, York Dispatch received a report of a crash on York Street at Norwood Farms Rd.  Companies arrived on scene to a single vehicle into a pole with one injury.  The patient was transported by York Ambulance.

Thursday night pump training and pump testing

Thursday, July 28, 2011  This week's training consisted of getting introduced to the newest ventilation saw, a K12 saw that will enhance our Truck Co. operations.  At the beginning of training, Capt. Paul Balentine went over the in's and out's of the new saw to the membership.  Once all questions were answered, companies crewed up on the apparatus and went to the Mill Pond on Lindsay Rd. to start the annual pump testing on Engine 4 and Engine 6.  Every year we are required to pump test every piece of fire apparatus in the station.  We took the opportunity to complete some drafting skills objectives that needed to be met for three drivers.  The conditions at the Mill Pond were less than desirable due to a lot of vegetation and "muck".  We will continue pump testing on a different date in a better location.

Garage and house saved at this 1st Alarm Structure Fire

Saturday, July 23, 2011  At just before 7:00 pm, York Village Fire was dispatched to Surf Point Rd. for a report of a vehicle fire.  Shortly after Squad 2 signed on responding, York Dispatch received a 2nd call reporting the a large plume of black smoke can be seen from Kittery.  More reports came in that the fire had extended to a garage.  Squad 2 arrived on scene with heavy fire showing and extension into a three-car attached garage.  Captain John Hunt requested a 1st Alarm Working Fire for the Non-Hydrant District.  This brings in more tankers from neighboring departments, as well as station coverage.  The fire was quickly knocked down and extension was minimal.
